How do you pick the right product? Many factors should be considered:
1. What is the style you are trying to achieve;
2. What is your hair type; and
3. what is your hair texture.
A qualified stylist can answer these questions for you and help you select the right product for you. I had a new client the other day and he showed me a picture of the hair style he wanted. I then asked him what product is he using to style his hair. He explained it was a paste of some kind. While a paste is a great universal product, it wasn’t the right product to achieve the style he wanted. I suggested grip wax by m from metro FOR MEN which is a low shine wax. I suggested this product for him because he had a lot of dark course straight hair and a paste will dull his hair color. In contrast, a wax will add a little shine while still showing texture and controlling his course hair. I also showed him how to use it to achieve multiple styles for day or night. His comment to me was, “why has no other stylist ever explained this to me?” and gave metro FOR MEN one of the best reviews ever.
We treat all of our customers like this and this expert approach is what sets us apart from the rest. This expert approach to service is why metro FOR MEN is the leading men’s only salon in Orange County, CA.

I conducted a haircutting class today with two new hair stylists and it reminded me why I continue to hire, train, and develop our service providers. Most often service providers are hired and placed behind the chair too fast. The problem with that is the customer suffers the consequences from a less than great service experience. During class today, I had the opportunity to take a new male guest who wanted highlights. This male guest had very very dark brown hair and highlights on this natural color would turn orange with out heat. His hair was too short to foil and place under the dryer to lift the hair to a beige. The bottom line is that highlights would not look good and I, as a professional stylist, want to ensure every guests leaves looking his best. I explained to the new guest that it would not be his best choice to highlight, why it isn’t a good choice, and acknowledged he wanted something new. I suggested a new hair style that would compliment his style, his head shape, and give him something new. He agreed with my direction and I gave him a haircut instead after showing him a picture of the style I wanted to give him. After about 30 minutes, 2 shampoos, a scalp massage, and a styling lesson later, he looked in the mirror and said, “wow, you made me look younger”. With that being said, he walked out of the shop with a whole new level of confidence and that made me feel GREAT!
I tell you this story because this is an example of what I educate our service providers to do as well. While we are in the business to give guests what they ask for, we are also in the business to make sure what we give a client looks good too. I asked my trainees what they would have done had this man sat in their chair. Would they have highlighted his hair knowing it wouldn’t look good had they not gone through my training before? They said yes they would have given him what he asked for because they were not trained to do otherwise by anyone else. This is why hiring service providers and placing them behind a chair instantly is not a good idea. Service providers need to be given expectations and guidance on how to be an expert in their field. I train our service providers to be experts and give them the tools to be so.
This practice has not always been in play at metro FOR MEN and am guilty of placing service providers behind the chair too soon. I came to the realization when we had a lot of first time guests and our retention of them was not so great. I asked those guests why they didn’t return and was provided a lot of insight. In the past 2 years, I’ve instituted The metro Men’s Academy where our service providers are placed in a 6 month program before being able to provide services on metro FOR MEN guests. Since adopting this program, our new guest retention has gotten sooooo much better and our satisfaction rating improved ten fold. I am proud of this program and our guests are too.
If you haven’t been to metro FOR MEN in a while, please come in again and experience this expertise for yourself. I look forward to seeing you soon!

I’ve been learning over the past 6 years about best business practices, including in the salon industry. metro FOR MEN employs best practices. What are metro FOR MEN’s best business practices:
1. We focus on the customer…that’s it! We wouldn’t be in business without our loyal customers and we truly CARE about them;
2. We vigorously train service providers in all areas of business. We host a 6 month intense training program that focuses on skill but also focuses on how to be a successful provider, including retention of clients, marketing, branding, retail/service recommendations, and how to be a solution based provider. We expect quality work and retain those associates who deliver just that;
3. We set-up all associates for success, including buying the necessary equipment to perform their job function. We want our associates to be successful out of the gate and if they do not have the money to buy their tools, how can they be successful;
4. We hire service providers new to the industry. It is our responsibility to bring in the business for our service providers to perform their talents. We only hire associates who are passionate about the men’s grooming industry and want to learn the best practices in the industry; and
5. We compensate our associates for commitment to the shop and supporting its vision. If the shop hits goal—the entire team gets a monetary bonus!
These practices are uncommon in the beauty industry. Why? Because most salon/spas run in the red and owners need to hire associates with a clientele. These owners promise high commission splits to secure that potential revenue. Unfortunately, this doesn’t solve the problem and these owners just get further in debt because they can’t afford to pay high commissions. metro FOR MEN is the leader in men’s grooming in Orange County, CA and we earned that title from our best business practices. We have a team that desires to grow each other, grow the shop, and maintain this high regarded reputation.
Support the movement for best business practices in the salon/spa industry, support salon/spas that host best business practices. Be a metro FOR MEN guest today!

Calling on Sunscreen!!! Yes sunblock should be worn every day whether it’s sunny or cloudy outside. This is a necessary step in any skin care regimen because sunblocks keeps the skin from absorbing UV rays. UV rays not only cause cancer but they age the skin as well. I often have clients ask me what I do that makes me look so young. While I am petite which helps me to look younger than I am. But I also drink water, don’t smoke, get plenty of rest, eat right and exercise. The key to my youthful appearance is the use of sunblock EVERYDAY no matter the weather. The more the skin is exposed to sun over the years, the skin texture becomes compromised. Sunblock is the fountain of youth in my opinion. Yes men need it too. Us women want our men to stay looking good forever. Stay looking young—use sunblock daily.
metro FOR MEN hosts sunblock by Menscience. It’s waterproof, ultralight and non-greasy and contains ingediients to moisturize the skin as well. This sunblock will not make your hands slippery to interfere with your golf game. I always like that excuse

Men’s hair style trends for 2011 are quite different than we have seen in the past decade. Men’s hair for this year is either long and flowing or short and structured—six degrees of separation. Less facial hair is synonymous with these trends. Have you watched Mad Men lately? If you have, you have seen that the characters are wearing clean, short hair that is combed into place using a gel or pomade, as seen in this example:
This look is being seen on the fashion runways, in Hollywood and has no age limit. A new take on the 1940s and 1950s have arrived.
Medium lengths for men went from “the messy look” to long fronts. Check it out: This is one of my favorite looks. This look though is so different than what most men are used to wearing and will require time to get use to. If done right, this medium, long front look can go from the office to nightlife with the use of the right product.
Men are wearing long hair again whether it has some layers or one length. A new twist on 80s hair is back. Trends for 2011 are exciting and fresh from what has been worn by men of late.

The new year is upon us and I can’t help reflecting on where the shop has been, where the shop is at, and where I want to take metro FOR MEN. Where have I been with metro FOR MEN? I’ve taken it from a failing salon with a no-quality reputation to a million dollar salon that has been recognized as one of The Fastest Growing Salons in America for the past 4 years, Best Barber, Best Men’s Haircut, and Best Shave. metro FOR MEN is now known for its quality service and friendly staff. That shift is what I’d been working day and night to obtain for the past 6 years. Where is metro FOR MEN today? The shop survived very well during this economic down turn and have added employee benefits and hired new staff during 2010. Our nail and waxing services have finally began to pay for themselves, with our hair services still being our driver. The current staff at metro FOR MEN is the best we’ve ever had. They want to work for a shop that is committed to its mission, future and reputation. Where is metro FOR MEN going in 2011? While I can only speculate, but I will continue to reach for the stars. I get asked every day whether I will open more salons, franchise, and the like. My answer is always…”if it is meant to be–it will be”. As the owner of the shop, I’ve always maintained the position of controlling growth until the flagship store is near perfection. We aren’t there yet, but are closer than we’ve ever been.
Until then, I will continue my mission to establish metro FOR MEN as the leader in men’s grooming. I was a participant in a class a while back that still continues to stick with me today. This class covered the cycle of business. That in the first years well-planned businesses grow and grow, then growth levels, and in year seven the business either reinvents to grow again or fails. metro FOR MEN is on year six and we have felt the plateau (although the economy didn’t help matters). I stay connected with what is going on in men’s trends and strategically place new products and services into our menu when I feel the time is right. In order to keep metro FOR MEN on the forefront of men’s grooming, I’ve added to our menu:
SERVICES: 5 min steam towel treatment, men’s skin detail, men’s anti-aging treatment, eye smoothing treatment, and a new mask treatment for the hands and feet designed to maintain moisture during the winter weather.
PRODUCTS: Stainless Steel razors and shave brushes, SuperSmile teeth whitening products, razor blade sharpeners by EverBlade, and the best reviewed nose/ear hair trimmer.
It’s a new year—time for a new and improved metro menu. We look forward to seeing you in 2011 and wish you a prosperous new year!

What does a well-groomed man look like? A well-groomed man:
* Has the perfect hairstyle for the image he wants to portray and uses the right haircare product to achieve that look, including shampoo AND conditioner and a styling aid;
* Uses a face wash to wash his face with and follows it up with sunblock because he knows using sunscreen will keep his skin looking youthful. He is also not afraid to use a complete skin care regimen because he understands the why…the fountain of youth;
* Keeps his facial hair trimmed and neat. No ear and nose hair visible. No single, long, bushy distracting eye brows. No unruly mustaches, beards or goatees;
* Has a white smile and used whitening teeth products daily;
* Wears clothes that fit well and styled to project the image he wants others to perceive;
* Smells fantastic because he uses the right cologne and doesn’t use too much;
* Has well-MANicured hands because the right handshake says it all; and
* Keeps his shoes groomed because he realizes that “you can judge a book by its cover and a man by his shoes”.
At metro FOR MEN we can show men how to get the right haircut for him, which products are best suited for his needs, advise him on skin care, trim facial hair, wax unwanted nose and ear hair, retail at-home teeth whitening systems and cologne, and get his shoes shined. Do you have a man in your life that could use a new look for 2011? Call metro FOR MEN today and schedule a free consultation.
Does he need wardrobe styling and image consulting because he wants to take his career to the next level, get that promotion, or land the perfect job? Call my colleague Diana Jennings with Brand You Image or visit her at www.brandyouimage.com.

OK now I’m a believer. I received a call a few months back from a vendor retailing disposable razor sharpeners. He claimed that this sharpener would keep a blade sharp for up to 6 months. I don’t know about you, but my razors may last a week before it gets corroded and rusty and I admit my razors are not the most expensive. Skeptical, but curious, I purchased 6 of these blade sharpeners and put them on our shelves at metro FOR MEN. I’m a huge gadget girl. When I got them in, I couldn’t figure out how these sharpeners work because all this thing was a copper strip and base. All I have to do is place my razor down and that’s it? This vendor called to check on our sales and I reported none . The challenge that we are having is that no one believed the technology worked. When I expressed this to the vendor he said “no problem I’m sending you 2 to try and share your experience with your customers.” I LOVE that approach. I love it when vendors believe so much in their product that they are willing to share it for free! I follow that best business practice in the shop as well and believe in my product so much that I have in the past given services for free knowing that guest will be back because metro FOR MEN is the leader in our service offering.
I’ve been using this blade sharpener now for 3 weeks and my disposable razor is as sharp as the day I got it out of the package. There is no soap residue, no rust, and no visible grime. What is this product? It’s an EverBlade.
“The EverBlade creates an energy field to repel rust and corrosion from metal blades. This is the leading cause of blade failure. Reducing the build up of rust and corrosion on your blade will keep it sharp much longer than otherwise possible. This means the EverBlade will save you a lot of money and reduce tons of wasteful packaging.” http://www.greeneverblade.com
It’s all in the copper strip. The bonus of this product IT’S ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY…no waste. I encourage you to try it. The next time you come in to metro FOR MEN, ask us about the EverBlade and we will give you a demo
