This month's Grooming Tip: Body Grooming

Anyone who has contemplated removing unwanted hair and who does not want to endure the expense and time of laser hair removal, should consider malescaping (a.k.a. waxing). If it's embarrassing to go shirtless at the beach, or if it is a desire to groom those eyebrows, malescaping is a convenient and inexpensive way to remove unwanted hair. This process will remove hair in the treated area with just one visit lasting 15 minutes to one hour depending on the circumference of the treated area. The scaped area will remain hair free for four to six weeks. metro FOR MEN recommends a return visit within six weeks, or when the hair is ½ inch long, to maintain a clean and smooth area.

This is what to look for in an environment that offers malescaping:
  1. Health and Safety: Use of a one time roll-on applicator that can be discarded after each client is preferred. If a pot of wax is being used, be sure that an applicator never re-enters the wax after touching the skin. A new applicator should be used every time.
  2. Temperature: The temperature of the wax should never burn the skin. Redness is common, but skin breakage is not.
  3. Treated Area: Anyone with acne should not utilize malescaping until the area is clean as an infection can happen. Additionally, anyone with excessive moles in the treated area should reconsider this process because hair should never be removed from within a mole. Hair removed from moles has been shown to cause cancer.
  4. Maintenance: After undergoing malescaping, always keep the treated area clean. Wash with soap and water, and apply an astringent or toner to the area at least twice a day for three days. If a breakout occurs, the area is unclean, however, a small breakout can be normal. It is also recommended to avoid sun exposure for two days after malescaping because the top layer of skin has been removed and is likely to burn easily.
One myth about malescaping is that more hair will grow. The opposite is true. Malescaping thins the amount of hair that grows back over time. Although it will not stop growing altogether, but there will be noticeable results with a continuous regimen.

Larry Damato, President, MD Builders, Inc.

"I was looking for a salon that was at least a little hip
and I was hoping that it would be a place that could
serve men as well they serve women. I ended up
getting more than I could have ever wished
for on both counts."
