Metro: for Men

Owner: Krista Martin

Business address: 15382 Alton Parkway, Irvine Telephone: (949) 450-0150

Web site: www.metroformen.com

Type of business: Full-service grooming for men's hair, nails and body

When opened: Sept. 1

Describe your business: A place where a man can go to receive all types of treatments that do not exceed 30 minutes, without feeling uncomfortable or having to sit next to a female counterpart.

Where did you get the Idea for the business? When I was working in Saville Barber, I realized that people misunderstood what we were trying to do. I decided I needed to reopen the business, not to be a barbershop or a hair salon, but a grooming environment for a guy where we know the latest trends but still use .the old-school barbering techniques in a country-club atmosphere.

How long did it take you to get from Idea to open doors? While I worked at Saville Barber, I watched the prior owners make changes that didn't quite fit. About a year ago, I decided I would buy and reopen the business.

What did you do after that time? There was a shell of the place already. So I got a business adviser who helped me decide whom I needed to talk to and at what point I needed to take certain steps. Then I hired an attorney, who drafted a purchase agreement. I went through an escrow company, negotiated and signed an agreement. .

How much did It cost to start the business? Approximately $200,000.

Where did you get the money? I refinanced my house, acquired a bank loan and used personal finances.

Your expected revenue for this year? $45,000

Is this your first business? Yes.

Did you write a business plan? No.

Whom did you seek for advice? An individual I have known for many years who has bought and sold many businesses in Orange County.

How are you marketing yourself? We are doing a lot of advertising in OC Metro magazine and also planning on running ads in several women's magazines.

The biggest thing you didn't think of before you started? How much energy it really does take to manage the business, marketing, recruiting, keep everybody happy and still cut hair.

CLIENT TESTIMONIAL

Larry Damato, President, MD Builders, Inc.

"I was looking for a salon that was at least a little hip
and I was hoping that it would be a place that could
serve men as well they serve women. I ended up
getting more than I could have ever wished
for on both counts."
